Spooky Slot Canyon, Escalante, Utah
June 10-13, 2010
Near the small town of Escalante there are numerous canyons and hiking opportunities and one of the most unique is called Spooky Slot Canyon. It's located in the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument area 26 miles south of the town of Escalante. Spooky is well named and pretty famous for how dark it gets deep into the slot and for the panic inspiring quality of its extremely narrow walls. It was by far, the tightest and skinniest we've ever experienced! It was absolutely amazing, challenging and lots of fun!
Our Accommodations - Free BLM Camping Site "Hole in the Rock Road"
We found a great free Bureau of Land Management (BLM) camping spot just outside the town of Escalante down a road called Hole in the Rock Road. There were several well used camping areas to both sides of the road and we found a nice little area with good shade. This spot was convenient for us since we'd be taking this road to the Spooky trailhead.
Spooky Slot Canyon
It was a little difficult navigating the trail to find Spooky but once we found the entrance it immediately captured our adventurous side! It was definately challenging because it was so extremely skinny to pass through and there was also a lot of rock climbing and scrambling. This is definately not a hike for someone whose claustrophobic!
