Pools of Semuc Champey, Guatemala
December 19-22, 2011
The pools of Semuc Champey was definately another top highlight in Guatemala. It was like being in paradise. Lost in a place with a feeling of tranquility and beauty where we swam and played all day long! This was an area you could definately loose yourself for a longtime; just disappear into a heaven-like state! OK, so you get the picture? We enjoyed our experience!
The Road is Paved with Good Intentions
Of course, before we could actually get to paradise, our shuttle had to break down just to keep us on our toes. Though the intentions are well meant to arrive quickly at the desired destination, shuttle operators drive their vehicles hard and tourists often pay the price with break downs and delays. But our driver was very considerate and helped make accommodation arrangements since he knew we would not arrive until late evening.
Our Accommodations - El Retiro Lodge
We were recommended to stay at a place called El Retiro Lodge. Set along the Lanquin river and located in the small traditional village of Lanquin itself. El Retiro is a series of small cabins and lodgings overlooking the mountains and forest and has a fantastic restaurant, sauna, and tranquil lounging areas. It was a fabulous find!
Pools of Semuc Champey - A Tourtuous Ride to Eden
Semuc Champey is a National Park that has a series of 5 limestone pools carved out by the massive and forceful Lanquin River. Most of the river actually disappears under ground, but the portion that remains above ground, has carved out what is now a protected area of turquoise pools that are extremely vibrant and clear. To get to Semuc Champey, we booked a "shuttle" which consisted of a ride in the back of a pick-up truck down a long bumpy road to the park. Once there, we were on our own for the entire day to frolic in the water and it was amazing.
