Rodney Bay, St Lucia
January 22 - 30, 2023
Saying goodbye to Martinique, we booked a ferry leaving directly from the south of Martinique in Le Marin with the vessel Capo Rosso. An enjoyable 2 hours later, we arrived at our next island destination of St Lucia. We arrived in the northern capital city of Castries and started our visit from here, in the area known as Rodney Bay. It's home to resorts, Reduit Beach, Pigeon Island, the Friday night fish fry, and a dense population of tourists. The second part of our visit will take us to the southern portion of the island to a village named Soufriere. Here, you'll find the famous twin pitons (volcanoes) and a lush and quiet way of island living. Most of the island activities and sights are also located in the south such as hiking, sulphur springs and some of the best beaches. Our visit won't be long because of the pricey nature of this island, but we will enjoy every minute!
Our Accommodations
We found a really great Airbnb studio apartment in the Gros Ilet/Rodney Bay area. Though we had to navigate a 20 minute walk down a local back road, sometimes a bit scary with traffic, the apartment itself hit all the marks. It had everything a traveler could ever need for a comfortable stay.
Rodney Bay and Reduit Beach
Rodney Bay is a very small grouping of shops, supermarkets and restaurants. Reduit Beach is the main local beach.
Pigeon Island
Pigeon Island National Landmark is a 44 acre Islet a short ride away from Rodney Bay. It once was detached and off shore from the mainland and acted as an important vantage point to spot and attack Spanish ships. In 1972, it was joined to the mainland by a man-made causeway. There are several ruins of military barracks here and a couple of small beaches. There is a great short hike to top of the lookout point with views of the Atlantic and Caribbean sea's. All in all, worth a visit!
