Roatan Island, Honduras
December 5-9, 2011
After finishing our volunteer commitment in the highland mountains of Honduras, we were excited to get back to water and visit the Bay Islands of Honduras. We chose Roatan which is the largest of the Bay Islands and sits atop the worlds second largest coral reef. The island has a mixture of English and Spanish history and with two cruise ports Roatan has fast become a top destination for cruise ships. It has seen a lot of development over recent years but still maintains a mix of both luxury and rustic acccommodations. The west side of the island is mostly touristy while the eastern side is more remote and isolated.
Our Accommodations - Georphis Hide Away
When our ferry docked, we shared a taxi to West End, which is where the more reasonably priced hotels are located. There are lots of options to choose from but we decided on a private cabin at a place called Georphis Hide Away . It ended up being a great little place tucked into the jungle but still directly across from the ocean.

The town of West End is very small but quaint
West Bay Beach
West Bay Beach is the most popular beach in Roatan and you know its popular when all the cruise ships stop there! Despite the tourists, it was still a nice place to relax and do some snorkeling. The waters were clear, clean and warm. We managed to find a spot at the very end of the beach, where it felt like we had it all to ourselves.
