Merida, Mexico
February 3 - April 2, 2024
After spending 3 weeks in Disney World for Deb's special birthday, we set our sights onto our next destination...Somewhere warm was the criteria. After researching a few options we decided to keep things simple and headed to the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico. We started our travels in the colonial city of Merida, said to be one of the safest areas in Mexico. Lots of expats have made their home in Merida and the city's history and colorful buildings would make for a nice base from which to get settled and begin our adventure.
Our Accommodations
We found a lovey and new Airbnb called Casa Nicolee. Owned by a Canadian couple, they are such warm and kind hosts! Our little casista had all the basics for a comfortable stay and was in easy walking distance of El Centro. As it turned out, we also ended up housesitting for them and watching their little pup Marley while they went away on a little trip! We also met many of their friends which made our time here extra special to make those lasting connections!
Around Merida
Merida is a bustling city. But locals are friendly and the centre parks are lively and colorful. We enjoyed spending time here, exploring the markets, the central parks and the many side streets.
Coastal Town of Progresso
We took an easy bus ride out to Merida's closest beach town - Progresso. We hopped on the Progresso bus and 45 minutes later pulled into our destination. Progresso is also a port town for cruise ships so they've put some investment into making a modern and long melacon to stroll along. Its of course the typical thing you'd expect with people trying to get you into overpriced restaurants and selling trinkets, but it was ok for a few days to escape city life. Did we love it? No. And we wouldn't go back.
