Mainland, Grenada
March 20 - May 1, 2023
Just a short ferry ride away we arrive in the main port town of St. George in mainland, Grenada. Within minutes of arriving, we notice how friendly and helpful the people are! A "hello, hello", "good mornin'", "good afta-noon" is commonplace here, and always met with smiles. Of all the port towns we visited, St. George by far is the most attractive and colorful we've seen. There are two main beaches here, the most famous is Grand Anse Beach where most of the hotels front and the nearby Mourne Rouge Beach (or BBC as its locally known). Grenada is also well known for its cocoa plantations, producing some of the best chocolate in the world and for its rum of course! We will be settled here the longest and looking forward to having some time to find a routine and dive deeper into the culture of Grenada.
Our Accommodations- Port Louis Marina
Our first stop was a Airbnb apartment located at the Port Louis Marina, just a short walk from the town of St. George. Run by a lovely local/British couple, they've done a great job maintaining the apartments and the grounds. We had a nice view of the marina and the area was quiet and relaxing.
Our Accommodations - The Hills of Grand Anse
Our next stop was a cute little Airbnb apartment in the hills above Grand Anse Beach. The young couple who own the house were so wonderful and very attentive! We had a great view of the bay and the ocean and it was a nice comfy stay. We could walk to the main supermarket and the beaches, albeit it meant a climb uphill when we returned, but everything in Grenada is on a hill!
Our Accommodations - Westerhall (West Island)
Our final stop was at a newly renovated Airbnb apartment in the prestigious area of Westerhall. Our hosts were so kind, welcoming and generous! We had a lovely view over the bays and experienced a whole different feel to island life. It was less convenient for supermarkets and food options so it meant catching a bus into "town" for groceries and food. But it did give us a chance to see something we may have not otherwise.
Around St. George
Famous for chocolate, we went into St. George to explore its waterfront, its old Fort and of course its chocolate store! Of all the port towns we've visited, we found St. George to be the most attractive and colorful.
Grand Anse Beach
The most famous beach in Grenada. A long strip of soft white sand and calm waters makes this the most popular place to spend a beach day. Most of the hotels line this beach though surprisingly, it never seemed over crowded or loud.
Mourne Rouge Beach
Also known as BBC by the locals, this beach is just a 20 minute walk away from Grand Anse, but feels a world away. Smaller but quieter and just as lovely.
West Indies Brewery
There hadn't been a brewery license handed out in Grenada for over 50 years! The brew master of the West Indies Brewery started out by giving away free beer until they opened up their first bar in 2014, and then moved to their current location in 2016. This cool little joint was a nice surprise! Good food and good local beers and ciders on tap.
The Container Park
A neat little area set up near the St George University. It started off with a few shipping containers turned coffee shops and then morphed into many more vendors adding into the mix. The Container Park is now a entity of its own and a busy local hangout spot!
Around Westerhall Area - West Island
During our stay at this side of the island, we had a chance to explore some of its marina's and a few small beaches facing the Atlantic. It was much more isolated out here and was less convenient to getting around by foot but we managed to explore a little and even had a chance to see some waterfalls.
Mount Carmel Waterfalls
Located about 40 minute bus ride from our apartment in Westerhall, we stopped at this waterfall on route to the 2nd largest town called Grenville. The falls are the tallest on the island and a nice spot for a dip!
