Lake Atitlan, Guatemala
December 22-29, 2011
Its amazing, but our travels throughout Guatemala have been one outstanding destination after another. When we arrived at
Lake Atitlan, we didn't know what to expect but were blown away by the beauty of the surrounding area, the simple living, and the tranquility that comes with being somewhat isolated from major services and large cities. Lake Atitlan is bordered by three volcanoes making the scenery dramatic and bold. We spent Christmas here, and we're sure its one of the best we've ever had.

A Delay Reaching Paradise
Oh, but of course, before we can arrive in paradise, we must have another broken down shuttle. We had a flat tire this time but thank goodness the driver had a completely bald spare tire with the metal belts showing to get us safely to our destination!
Sharing Gifts
On route, we stopped to change shuttles and had the opportunity to give away some Canadian pencils to the local kids who seemed shy but happy to receive the gift. Little did they know, the real gift was spending some time with them.
Town of Panajachel
Our Accommodation - Casa Linda
Our first stop on the lake was the town of Panajachel. It is the largest of the towns bordering the lake and you can immediately sense the chaos. We spent a few days here at a nice little hotel called Casa Linda. Extremely reasonable rates and a nice central location.
Town of San Marcos
Our Accommodations - La Paz
Our next stop on the lake was at the funky town of San Marcos. Nobody really knows why, but this town has became a meca for yoga, massage, meditation, and other alternative practices. It was kinda a neat little place and we met some nice couples that we spent time with. It was a busy arrival day for tourists so it was a bit difficult to find a room. We eventually settled a hotel called La Paz which was quite unique and charming.
Town of Jaibalito
Our Accommodations - Casa del Mundo
We decided to splurge and made a reservation at the most magical hotel around the lake called Casa del Mundo. A beautiful hotel built on the side of a mountain with a knock-out view of the lake and the volcanoes. Its located between two small towns of Santa Cruz (30 minute walk along a bluff) and Jaibalito (5 minute walk). We were really happy to spend such a special Christmas here.
