Koh Kradan Island, Thailand
March 17, 2014
Along the southern peninsula of Thailand on the west side (Andaman Coast/Indian Ocean) we visited an island called Koh Kradan which is part of an island chain known as the Trang Islands. Its one of the most isolated of the three most popular and it was this idea that drew us here to visit. It was indeed a very pretty island with great views of the surrounding karst mountains and other nearby islands. If you walked down the beach away from the main hustle and bustle you could truly feel like you were alone on some deserted island in the middle of nowhere. On the down side, the waters were choppy making it difficult to swim or snorkel and everyday, hords of day trippers arrived by boat from other nearby islands to desend on poor little Koh Kradan bursting the bubble of solitude. In the end, we decided to only stay one night so we could carry on to our final destination where we could spend more time in one location before becoming land locked again!
Our Accommodation - Kradan Beach Resort
The sleeping options are limited and all hotels are concentrated along the main beach area of the island. The upside, almost everyone has beach view rooms. All of the budget options are roughly of same quality and standard: that is, rustic and basic. We chose Kradan Beach Resort which had rows of standard rooms as well as individual little shacks.
Long Tail Boats
Long tail boats are a common mode of transport native to South East Asia. The driveshaft must be extended by several metres of metal rod to properly position the propeller, giving the boat its name and distinct appearance. We rode these a lot when traveling among the Thai islands. Our rides varied in length from 5 minutes up to 2 hours.
