House Sitting Kerala, South India
April - July, 2014
Wow, India! We feel very blessed to have found such a unique and wonderful house sitting assignment. We're caring for a lovely new home in the southern state of Kerala, located near the larger city of Angamaly. The state of Kerala in general, is quite tropical and green. Its known as the "softer India" because its more developed in tourism, services and economics and makes a good first introducti
on to the country. The house is situated in a quiet neighbourhood and is built among the surrounding "paddies" so we have beautiful views looking out into the wild jungle. The home owners are truly wonderful and kind people and we were happy to spend some time with them beforehand. We're excited about our experience in India, a country which seems so exotic and foreign to us. We've heard varying stories from other travelers about loving it, hating it, and sometimes both! We know for sure, it will be a memorable time here and we're really looking forward to it!The House
The house is situated in a quiet neighbourhood and is built among the surrounding "paddies" so we have beautiful views of the wild jungle. We are a 20 minute walk from a very small town called Mookkanoor where we have a bakery, fruit and veggie stand and small shops. We're also a 15 minute tuk tuk ride from the larger city of Angamaly with a major bus station that takes us almost anywhere we need to go and lots of services and shopping.
First Indian meal in Kerala!
Our first meal was served on banana leafs and we sampled an assortment of vegetarian delights!
Famous in India!
When we go out, we are a sight of curiosity to the local people! Kids often enjoy trying out their English with us.
Here's 3 sisters who were very interested in us in the cheese isle of the grocery store!
Easter Breakfast
We were invited by a very kind and giving family in our neighbourhood to enjoy Easter breakfast with them. The family lives only a few minutes down the road from us so we socialize quite frequently with them and often go over for tea and treats or a game in the evenings.
Getting Coconuts
We have coconut trees in our garden and a friend of the home owners came over to harvest the coconuts from our trees. They had quite a clever contraption for climbing up and down and they made it look so easy!
Yoga and Inspiration
Anand is a yoga master and kalari expert and we began exchanging English lessons for yoga lessons the first week of our arrival in Kerala. Anand is a very charasmatic man with a big warm heart and he's become a wonderful friend! He's made our time here memorable and we truly enjoyed the lessons both in yoga and in life that he's taught us. He was our inspiration for incorporating daily yoga into our lives and we feel very grateful to have shared such a special time with him.
