Hadrians Wall, Northcumberland National Park, Scotland
May-June, 2013
Hadrians Wall stretches across North England and was a defensive fortification in Roman Britian. It began in AD 122 during the rule of Emperor Hadrian. In addition to its military role, gates through the wall served as customs posts. A significant portion of the wall still remains today and can be followed along the Hadrian's Wall Path. Its a Unesco World Heritage site and one of the most popular attractions in Northern England.
Our Accommodation - Hadrians Wall Camping Site
We found a great campsite near the small village of Haltwhistle called Hadrians Wall Camping Site. Surrounding by the rolling hills and farmlands, it was a peaceful location.
Photo's of Hadrians Wall
The wall was built 2000 years ago by the Romans to keep the Scottish out of England (or so the story goes).
It was more about being a symbol of division rather than a strong hold.
William Wallace Monument
Nearby was a monument dedicated to the famous William Wallace (made famous by Mel Gibson in the movie Braveheart) who helped fight for Scottish independance from England.
Scotts View
We drove to a famous lookout point called Scotts View which apparently was a favorite spot of a famous writer named Walter Scott of the 1800's. It truly had amazing views and we can see why it was a favorite spot!
