Fort Kochi, South India
April 12, 2014
The small town of Fort Kochi was a thriving fishing village in the pre-colonial Kerala. It was first ruled by the Portuguese followed by the Dutch and then the British. It therefore, had a european feel to it and we enjoyed a nice relaxing day exploring the quiet streets and eating at a fantastic local restaurant.
Fishing Nets
These huge nets are fixed in place from the shoreline and massive wooden arms spread the nets 20 meters or more and are suspended over the sea. Each net is operated by a team of 6 fisherman. Today, the nets are disappearing in favour of alternative ways of fishing and they mainly operate as a tourist attraction now.
Food at Dal Roti
Of course, its about the food! We found a wonderful local place called Dal Roti in Fort Kochi which served up the best Indian food so far! Deb sampled a platter of fried bread stuffed with cauliflower, dahl (lentil beans) and chicken. Doug tried a Kati roll (fried bread rolled up with tandoori chicken). All served up on a silver platter fit for a queen!
