Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay
January 5-6, 2016
The tiny country of Uruguay is easily reached by a short ferry ride from Buenos Aires. We were excited to move onward to another country and our first stop was the historic town of Colonia del Sacramento. Founded in 1680 by the Portguese the colony switched hands several times between the Spanish and later the Brazilians until it finally became part of Uruguay in 1828. Today Colonia is a Unesco world heritage site and feels like you've stepped back in time. Its a charming place to visit with cobblestone streets, hidden parks and historic buildings. The waterfront has a unique milky brown color mainly due to the large amounts of sediment being stirred up by river and ocean water coming together but the locals don't mind to take a dip. They also seem obsessed with old retro cars here! Everything from rusting on the side of a street, being used as a giant plant pot or converted into a private table for two at a restaurant. Overall Colonia was a pleasant place to wonder for the short time we were there.
