Charleston, South Carolina
November 14-15, 2010
The further south we started heading, the more obvious the charming southern accent became. There's a reason Charleston has been voted one of America's best cities three times over: The grits are spicy, the weather is warm and the people are oh-so charming. The city has a lot of history as rich as a biscuit covered in gravy and Charleston did indeed steal our hearts with all that it has to offer.
Our Accommodations - The Oak Plantation Campground
We found a nice campground only a 5-10 minute drive to downtown Charleston called The Oak Plantation Campground. Excellent location and facilities.
Downtown Charleston
So much of Charleston captured our hearts. We loved the beautiful old buildings that were so well kept, the cobblestone streets, the mature greenery and the huge selection of unique pubs, restaurants and shops. The population on the penninsula is only 80,000 making it a very quiet and charming place to visit.
Rice Plantation Tour - Middleton Plantation
We decided to do a historic rice plantation tour and get a feel for the way life was in the South. There are three popular plantations known as the Ashley River Plantations and each provide a tour. We chose the Middleton Plantation (Middleton Place). Middleton Plantation was a successful rice plantation during the 1700's. The 1700's was a time when the operations and labor on the plantation was conducted by enslaved Africans. We did a tour explaining the life of enslaved Africans and learned a lot about the history of the area. The grounds and garden of the plantation were so beautiful and so vast!
