Bequia Island, Grenadines
February 12 - 17, 2023
From St Lucia, we boarded a 20 minute flight with LIAT airlines for the short and sweet trip to the island of St Vincent. We spent a few nights just outside the capital port town of Kingstown at a Airbnb in the countryside. Our next stop would be exploring the islands of the Grenadines which comprise of 32 islands, all dotted south of St Vincent, most of which are uninhabited. Islands that have development include: Bequia, Mustique (Mick Jaggers hangout!), Canouan, Mayreau, Palm, and Union. We hopped on the Bequia Express ferry and headed 15 km's to the largest of the Grenadine's, the island of Bequia. At just 7 square miles with a population of around 5,000, it offers travelers a chance for a more authentic Caribbean experience. The pace of life here is slower than on more popular holiday islands and there is less development. Unspoilt scenery and friendly locals add to its motto: ‘the tiny island with a big heart’. We couldn’t agree more!
Our Accommodations
Wanting to stay closer to the "town" of Port Elizabeth, we found a sweet and lovely cottage through Airbnb called the Mango Nook. Run by the most wonderful lady named Lusan, we fell in love with its big yard and wrap around deck. Within walking distance everything and a perfect hideaway.
The Belmont Walkway
The belmont walkway is a narrow walking path that connects the town of Port Elizabeth to the first beach of Princess Margaret and onward to the second beach of Lower Bay. Its a lovely stroll that passes shops, restaurants and small boutique accommodations.
Island Sights
Bequia known centuries ago for whaling and boat building, is now largely dependent on tourism.
The best beaches can be found on the Caribbean side just a short stroll away from the main port town. Known as Princess Margaret Beach and Lower Bay Beach, they are soft sandy beaches with turquoise waters...what else can one expect in the Caribbean! Cruise ships call here so it can get busy during the peak hours of the day.
