Anza Borrego Desert State Park, California
January 24-26, 2010
Anza Borrego Desert State Park is located within the Colorado Desert of sourthern California and gets its name from an 18th century Spanish explorer. The park encompases 600,000 acres and is the largest state park in California. There are countless opportunities for hiking and exploring with a lot diversity in terrain. Anza Borrego was by far, one of our most memorable spots when travelling throughout the U.S.A.
Our Accommodations - Free Camping at Peg Leg
There is a lot of great camping here including a campground run by Anza Borrego Desert State Park which offers
both hook-ups or primitive sites. In addition to this, there are many primitive campgrounds in the area where you can camp for free! We chose a free site known as "Peg Leg" and there were quite a few RV'ers here, all of whom were extremely friendly and many had been returning to the same spot for years.
Palm Canyon Trail
We were really happy and excited that Deb's parents decided to escape the winter blues of Canada and meet us to explore some areas of the southern U.S.A. Here we are together at the start of one of the most popular trails in the park called
Palm Canyon Trail. It gently slopes upward, eventually arriving at a palm oasis where palm trees can be viewed growing in their natural habitat.
Coachwhip Wash Canyon Trail
Because of the heavy rains, we were unable to explore many of the best hiking trails in the park but we were able to hike one called Coachwhip Wash Canyon Trail. It was a lot different then our first hike providing some neat trails that zig zagged through the canyons and then up some fairly steep rocks. It was great fun!
Anza Borrego Desert State Park
February 26-March 6, 2010
Yes, we have returned to one of our favorite places! This time, we took advantage of the improved weather and included a few other hikes within the park. Great adventure!
Gold Metal Hockey Game - Canada vs. U.S.A
While we were in Borrego Springs, the Vancouver Olympic gold metal hockey game between Canada and the U.S.A took place.
It went into overtime, ending with Canada putting in the winning goal to win GOLD! We both felt so proud of our country in that moment, watching our team collect their metals while listening to our national anthem. Its great to be Canadian!

The Slot Canyon Trail
Simply known as The Slot, this was a fascinating hike! It took about 2 hours round trip and meandered through the canyon where the path became very narrow in many spots, twisting and turning along the way.
The Wind Caves Trail
The Wind Caves Trail was a very unique hike. It took about 3 1/2 hours round trip and we began by winding our way through a large wash (empty river basin) among huge red and orange colored mountains.
Eventually, we entered the start of the trail leading to the "Wind Caves" which are huge rocks that have been gouged out by natural elements, leaving holes that create cave like structures.
