Alegria, El Salvador
April 3-6, 2012
Alegria is a beautiful mountain town located at 1,200 meters in elevation. its near spotless streets and windowsills overflowing with rose bushes, sunflowers and orchids give it a fairytale feel quite unlike the rest of El Salvador. The town is also famous for its crater lake named La Laguna de Alegria which its waters are said to have healing medicinal powers. There is a wonderful lookout point at the top of 100 stairs and nearby is the cute town of Berlin another pretty mountain village. While we were here, it was Samana Santa (Holy Week) which is a big religious holiday celebrated throughout Central America. It was nice to be part of the festivities in a small village where you could experience the holiday without experiencing the craziness found in the larger cities. All in all, it was a lovely place to spend some time.
Our Accommodations - Entre Piedras
We wanted to stay within the centre of Alegria and found a fantastic place right across from central park called Entre Piedras. There were only a few rooms built around a pretty interior courtyard and the family of the hotel were very welcoming and friendly. Their onsite cafe was really good too!
The Town of Alegria
Alegria, such a pretty little town. We really enjoyed being there, submersing ourselves into the slow pace of life. And eating "pupusa's" again! We've missed those.
Laguna de Alegria
We did a hike to a nearby volcanic crater lake called Lago de Alegria located about 3 km walk from town up into the hills above Alegria. It was a beautiful walk through forest and farm lands. The lake was busy with locals camping and having picnics enjoying Samana Santa (holy week).
